Chogyam Trungpa was a very influential 20th century Buddhist teacher and his Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism has become a classic of Western Buddhism since its publication over 40 years ago. Written around the time Trungpa Rinpoche founded the Naropa Institute, Cutting Through exposes our tendency to always look outside ourselves for comfort and security. No mere self-help, pop psychology, New Age spirituality book, he instead warns: "When we face things as they are, we give up the hope of something better. There will be no magic." While no-nonsense, Cutting Through was originally a series of lectures delivered by Trungpa Rinpoche. Even as transcriptions, his approach comes across as unflinching, but gentle; uncanny but practical; fearless but also funny. This winter and spring, please enliven our discussion as we delve into this important book.
